Russian Foundation for Advanced Research Projects Approved the Method Statement for Heavy Duty Threads

2 November 2020

It is planned to be realized in 2020-2023

The Russian Foundation for Advanced Research Projects (FARP) has approved the method statement for the heavy duty threads of ultra-high molecular polyethylene (UHMPE) that do not lose their properties with time, as the Press Service of the Foundation informed TASS.

The FARP Research and Technology Board “approved the realization of the method statement for development of the technology of processing the reactor powders of UHMPE into the threads and fibers”. “The head contractor of the project is Boreskov Institute of Catalysis. The project is planned to be realized in 2020-2023”, the Foundation informed.

As the sources in FARP explained, the ultra-high molecular polyethylene is a construction material fit for operation in the extreme conditions. The UHMPE threads feature the highest values of the specific elastic-strength characteristics, do not absorb water and do not lose their properties during storage or operation.

“The project would be the first in the world to develop the catalytic systems and technological process of obtaining the reactor powder UHMPE fit for processing by various methods. On the totality of parameters this technology exceeds the global level of industrial production of the promising engineering plastics, composition and construction materials”, — the Press Service quotes Aleksandr Panfilov, the General Director Deputy, head of the division of chemical-biological and medical studies of FARP.

As noted in FARP the threads and fibers based on UHMPE would be used for development of the products and items of mass-market, including the bearing components of optical and submarine cables, elements of building and road constructions, filtering materials and separators for new types of current sources, mooring, hauling and anchor ropes, rigging and sails.
