BIC Held Competition of Boreskov Post-Graduate Scholarships

29 April 2022

On April 22, Boreskov Institute of Catalysis held competition of post-graduate scholarships honoring Academician Georgii Boreskov, founder and the first director of the Institute. The competition was held within the framework of the memorial seminar dedicated to the 115th anniversary of the Academician. The first-year post-graduate student Mariya Solovieva won the competition with her work “Development of photoactive self-cleaning materials and coatings for destruction of chemical substances, macromolecules and microorganisms under exposure to light”.

The annual competitions for post-graduate scholarships honoring Academicians Georgii Boreskov and Kirill Zamaraev were established in the Institute in 2009. The purpose of the competitions is to attract the young talented specialists to the research in the field of catalysis in the directions that are of top priority for the Institute: heterogeneous catalysis and technologies of catalytic processes (Boreskov scholarship) and studying of mechanisms of catalytic reactions at the atomic-molecular level and development of physical methods of research (Zamaraev scholarship).

The Boreskov scholarship-2022 winner Mariya Solovieva is the post-graduate student in Boreskov Institute of Catalysis in the field of kinetics and catalysis. The researcher combines her studying with working as Junior Researcher in the Department of Unconventional Catalytic Processes in BIC. Mariya’s scientific interests embrace development of photocatalytic materials, self-cleaning under exposure to light. Mariya’s work presented to the competition continues her research in the course of post-graduate qualification work.

“My study is dedicated to the development of photoactive self-cleaning materials, in particular fabrics, that, when exposed to light, are able to clean their own surface and surrounding environment from various pollutants, such as harmful chemical substances, viruses, and bacteria”, says the author. “Such materials can significantly decrease the probability of pathogen transmission and simplify exploitation of the materials and things made of it”.

The results of Mariya’s research have been presented at various conferences, in particular, abroad; co-authored with other scientists she published six papers in foreign scientific journals, including in Chemical Engineering Journal (IF = 13.273).

“I am very happy that I won”, concludes Mariya. “No doubt I wouldn’t do it without support from my colleagues and research supervisor Dmitry Selishchev, as well as from my friends”.
