Bridging the Gap between Model and Real Catalysis: the 4th German-Russian Seminar

11 September 2016

On September 5-7, 2016, a German town of Bad Staffelstein saluted the 4th German-Russian Seminar “Bridging the Gap between Model and Real Catalysis” organized by Fritz Haber Institute of Max Planck Society (Germany) and Boreskov Institute of Catalysis SB RAS (Russia). The first event in the series took place in 2007. Since then the Seminar became traditional and is held once in every three years, Germany and Russia taking turns to host it.

More than 40 experts in catalysis from Russia, Germany and Switzerland met on the German land this year to plunge into the problems of linking the model studies in catalysis and the industrial technologies.

The scientific program of the Seminar included six plenary lectures and 36 oral presentations dedicated to three main topics:

  • In situ studies of catalytic reactions;

  • (Photo) electrochemistry;

  • Nanoparticles and catalysis.

The plenary lectures were presented by the leading experts in catalysis:

  • Dr. Marc Willinger, Fritz Haber Institute of Max Planck Society (Germany);

  • Prof. Dr. Timo Jacob, University of Ulm and Helmholtz Institute Ulm (Germany);

  • Prof. Dr. Jeroen van Bokhoven, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zürich and Paul Scherrer Institute (Switzerland);

  • Dr. David Star, Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin for Materials and Energy (Germany);

  • Dr. Vasily V. Kaichev, Boreskov Institute of Catalysis SB RAS (Russia);

  • Prof. Dr. Alexander Yu. Stakheev, N.D.Zelinsky Institute of Organic Chemistry RAS (Russia).

The receiving party greeted everybody cordially, which produced the air of friendship and warmth. The presentations by the participants sparkled great interest of the auditory and triggered active discussions.

 The 5th Russian-German Seminar “Bridging the Gap between Model and Real Catalysis” is decided to be held in Russia in 2019. As is already customary, the seminars of the series taking place in Germany occupy the medieval monasteries, whereas the Russia-based seminars are held in the locations with unique nature: the first Seminar in Russia welcomed its guests in Altai, and the second, at Lake Baikal. Professor Robert Schlögl of Fritz Haber Institute of Max Planck Society suggested inviting the next event to Novosibirsk Akademgorodok and was unanimously supported in his proposal.
