Presentation by BIC’s Researcher at Online-Forum of Young Scientists of Shanghai Cooperation Organization Receives Note of Acknowledgement from Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russian Federation

27 January 2021

In the end of November, 2020, the 1st Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) – Young Scientist Conclave (YSC) was held online, in which Dr. Sardana BANZARAKTSAEVA, junior researcher of the Group of Complex Technological Projects of Boreskov Institute of Catalysis, participated. Her participation in the Conclave received the note of acknowledgement from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russian Federation.

The event was organized by the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (Hyderabad, India). The Conclave was attended online by the young scientists from six countries-members of SCO — India, China, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Russia, and Uzbekistan. The scientific program included more than 60 oral presentations nominated and approved by the ministries of the participating countries in the following thematic sessions: Agriculture and Food Processing; Sustainable Energy and Energy Storage; Biotechnology and Bio-Engineering; Combating COVID-19 and Emerging Pandemics through Research and Innovation; Environmental Protection and Natural Resource Management.

Sardana Banzaraktsaeva presented a report named “The complete cycle of ethylene production from biomass” in the Biotechnology and Bio-Engineering Session. The expert told about a new low-tonnage technology of producing ethylene by dehydration of bioethanol made from cellulose materials.

“The cellulose materials compose a major part of the agricultural wastes, and one of the most promising directions of their industrial processing can be the manufacturing of ethylene and a number of innovative materials on its basis, — says Sardana. — For the first time we managed to realize a complex approach to the bio- and catalytic technologies and optimize the complete cycle of ethylene production from the renewable biomaterials. The complex approach allows producing bioethanol with a lower content of admixtures, which would make its use for the ethylene production more efficient, lower the expenses at the stages of purification and conditioning of the interim and final products. We developed the best conditions for the catalytic process of dehydration of ethanol into ethylene, combining the experimental research on the laboratory and pilot plants with the methods of mathematic modeling. This resulted in the creation of the process with the technical-economic indicators at the level of the best global technologies”.

Participation of Sardana Banzaraktsaeva in the Conclave received a note of acknowledgement from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russian Federation. In particular, it underlines the decent level of demonstration of the specialist’s competence that found a positive response among the research community formed within the SCO and had a very beneficial influence on the image of Boreskov Institute of Catalysis in the international context.

Information. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is an international organization established in 2001. Today it counts eight countries. The main purposes of SCO are the strengthening of mutual trust among the member states, joint efforts to maintain and ensure peace, security and stability as well as the collaboration in politics, trade, the economy, research, technology and culture, and other areas.
