Academician Valerii Bukhtiyarov is the Third Director of Boreskov Institute of Catalysis to Become Member of Academia Europae

26 April 2021

Director of Boreskov Institute of Catalysis (BIC) Academician Valerii Bukhtiyarov is elected a member of Academia Europaea (section of Chemical Sciences). Two previous BIC’s Directors have also been members of Academia Europaea, Academician Kirill Zamaraev and Academician Valentin Parmon (now the Academic Advisor of BIC and Chair of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences).

Academia Europaea (AE) is a non-governmental organization established in 1988, uniting the leading scientists in Europe and the world. As of October, 2020, the Academia Europaea counts 4,567 members, 265 of them being within the section of Chemical Sciences. In total 84 Russian scientists are the member of AE. The best represented countries are Great Britain (789), Germany (640), and France (536).

Valerii Bukhtiyarov is a prominent expert in the field of physicochemistry of surface, heterogeneous catalysis and functional nanomaterials, author and co-author of more than 300 scientific papers and 16 patents for inventions. His research activity embraces the fields of heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis, functional nanomaterials as well as the physical methods of surface study and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The sphere of his interests encompasses the studies at the interface of surface science and heterogeneous catalysis, the use of physical methods for studying absorption and surface chemical reactions including the measuring in the in-situ (operando) modes, the use of nanotechnological approaches to the modeling and studying of the heterogeneous catalysts as well as the investigation and use of size and synergy effects in various industrially important reactions on mono- and bimetal catalysts. His recently gained activity on the controlled synthesis of nanocomposite materials allows closing the fundamental approach to the development of new catalytic systems consisting in that the molecular design of heterogeneous catalysts with the improved catalytic properties (activity, selectivity, stability) is based on the detailed studying of the mechanism of the reaction and structure of the active sites at the atomic level.

In 2016 Valerii Bukhtiyarov was awarded the Balandin Prize that is given to the prominent works in the field of catalysis. In 2019 he was awarded the Russian Federation Government Prize in Science and Technology.

Valerii Bukhtiyarov actively participates in training of young researchers. Since 2000 he heads the Chair of Catalysis and Adsoprtion of the Department of Natural Sciences of Novosibirsk State University. Eleven PhD theses have been successfully defended under his supervision. In addition, he is the Editor-in-Chief in “Kinetics and Catalysis” and a member of editorial board in “Journal of Structural Chemistry”.

Director of Boreskov Institute of Catalysis gives great attention to the international collaboration. Valerii Bukhtiyarov was a member of HZB Scientific Selection Panel (BESSY, Berlin), EFCATS (European Federation of Catalytic Societies) Member at Large. Today he is an active representative of Russia in WCOC International Board (World Congress on Oxidation Catalysis). He coordinates the Russian part of the Project RSF-FWF: "Single Atom Catalysis for Improved hydrogenation Selectivity (SACIS): model and applied catalysis on supported metal atoms and clusters", Boreskov Institute of Catalysis - Technical University, Vienna, as well as the Project “Development of the in-situ methods of studying solid surfaces” along with the Fritz-Haber Institute (Max Planck Society, Berlin).
