Contract Signed for Manufacturing Unique Equipment for Synchrotron “SKIF”

28 May 2021

Academician Valerii Bukhtiyarov, Director of Boreskov Institute of Catalysis, and Academician Pavel Logachev, Director of Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics, signed the state contract for manufacturing, assembling, delivering, and start-up works of technologically sophisticated equipment for the accelerator complex of the Shared Research Facility “Siberian Circular Photon Source” (SRF “SKIF”). The contract was signed in the House of Scientists in presence of Andrey Travnikov, the Governor of Novosibirsk Oblast, and Academician Valentin Parmon, the Chair of Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Sciences. The contract sum is about 9 bln rubles.

“The subject of the second contract is the storage ring of the accelerator of 476 m in perimeter, the front-ends – the devices allowing bringing the synchrotron radiation to the stations, and undulators generating the radiation. This equipment is to be made by December 31, 2023, so that we would demonstrate the beam”, — noted Dr. Evgeny Levichev, Head of the Project Office of “SKIF”.

He underlined that the second contract is the largest in the amount of equipment and the most important, since its realization would determine the quality of parameters of the facility. “The contract is signed, and Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics works through the best variants for manufacturing this equipment. BINP would make the larger portion of the works, but other Russian organizations are planned to be engaged in, for example, manufacturing high-frequency oscillators. A minor share of the equipment will be ordered abroad”.

The contract succeeds to the first contract, the framework of which supposes the manufacturing of linear accelerator and booster synchrotron. Today the equipment of the injection complex is being produced in BINP.

SRF “SKIF” is the 4+ generation source of synchrotron radiation with 3 GeV energy and unique characteristics. The facility is being constructed within the “Science and Universities” National Project and “Akademgorodok 2.0” Program in Koltsovo science city in Novosibirsk Oblast as an element of advanced domestic network of mega-science facilities. It would allow research with bright and intensive beams of X-ray radiation in various fields of science, chemistry, physics, materials science, biology, geology, etc. “SKIF” will include 30 experimental beamlines, and up to 2000 scientists from Russia and abroad will be conduct their research there.

The Federal Research Center Boreskov Institute of Catalysis is the Customer and Developer of the “SKIF”. The object is designed by the Central Design and Technology Institute (AO “TSPTI”, affiliated with the “TVEL” fuel company of Rosatom). The General Contractor is “Kontsern Titan-2”, also part of Rosatom. The only provider for manufacturing and launching of the technologically sophisticated equipment for SRF “SKIF” is Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics. The source of synchrotron radiation is planned to be made by the end of 2023, and in 2025 the research should start at the first six beamlines.
