Scientific Calendar. January 21, International Post-Graduate Students’ Day

21 January 2022

Young scientists are a necessary catalyst for research development, a breeding ground for innovative ideas, and a basic working link in academic studies. Growing popularity of the International Post-Graduate Students’ Day indicates an increasing attention to the academic youth in society and understanding its role in the development of science. The holiday was introduced in 2008 with approval of Regulation on researchers in universities and Instruction on training of science employees in scientific and educational institutes in applied, exact and natural sciences of Council of People’s Commissars of RSFSR on January 21, 1925.

The post-graduate training program in Boreskov Institute of Catalysis trains specialists in two areas: Chemical sciences and Chemical technology. The Dissertation Board on chemical sciences in BIC allows those of post-grads who chose the first area to defend their theses in Physical chemistry or Kinetics and catalysis.

The post-graduate students of Boreskov Institute of Catalysis work in various areas of scientific knowledge: hydrogen technologies, processing of raw hydrocarbons, alternative energetics, environment protection from polluting emissions, designing of new materials, and many others. They also work in the team building the new mega-science project – the cutting-edge source of synchrotron radiation of the 4+ generation “Siberian Circular Photon Source” (SKIF) that is to be constructed in Koltsovo, Novosibirsk region. The students regularly take part in the R&D competitions and win various scholarships and grants, including the scholarships of President of RF, leading Russian companies, grants of RFBR and RSF.

Today 44 post-grad students are being trained in Boreskov Institute of Catalysis, with 6 to 8 specialists finishing their education each year. In recent years they grow in number in general, the state-financed openings increasing in number as well with 12 of them in 2020 and as much as 15 in 2021. The competition for each place is also growing, for example, in the academic year of 2021-2022 it was 1.2 persons per place. Starting this academic year there are also paid places in the post-graduate program in Boreskov Institute of Catalysis.

Novosibirsk Science Center SB RAS was designed so that the main inflow of young scientists into Boreskov Institute of Catalysis is provided by Novosibirsk State University, the students from which come to the scientific institutes of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences for making the course and diploma works while still in the first years of education. There are also post-graduate students from other universities of Russia working in the Institute of Catalysis.

Boreskov Institute of Catalysis is proud of its post-grads both those who are still studying and those who has finished their training, and wishes successful academic career, major achievements, and satisfying work to all students and young scientists!
