Russian Scientists Created Highly Active and Long-Life Electrocatalysts for Fuel Elements

Scientists from Southern Federal University (SFU) and Boreskov Institute of Catalysis developed active and long-life catalysts for low-temperature fuel elements. The results of the study are published in the international open access journal Catalysts.

“We developed carbon support with the surface covered with N-doped carbon and sent it to Rostov-na-Donu, where the researchers of SFU placed the Pt-containing catalysts on it. The tests showed that our electrocatalysts show higher activity and stability as compared with the commercial catalysts”, said Dr. Evgeni Gribov, Senior Researcher of the Department of Unconventional Catalytic Processes of BIC.

The SFU press service informs that the use of the new modified carbon supports developed by the BIC’s scientists for obtaining bimetal catalysts is an important subject in the field of materials generation for hydrogen energetics.

According to the press service data the electrocatalysts obtained with a combined approach are of great interest for the use in air-hydrogen fuel elements that are utilized in stationary power stations, as autonomous sources for thermal and electric supply of buildings, in the motors of transport, as the power sources for unmanned aerial vehicles, and in portable chargers. The high power energetic plants based on the fuel elements are widely used.

The study is conducted within the framework of the project supported by the Russian Science Foundation, headed by Dr. Anastasiya Alekseenko, Leading Researcher of SFU.
