Russian Congress Ruscatalysis-2021 Opened in Kazan

21 September 2021

The IV Russian Congress Ruscatalysis opened in Kazan. This is the largest event in Russia in the field of catalysis that became a site for efficient interaction of the academic and industrial communities. This year the Congress is attended by more than 400 people.

Director of Boreskov Institute of Catalysis, Academician Valerii Bukhtiyarov noted that the Congress Ruscatalysis-2021 traditionally organized by the Institute is held for the fourth time with 418 participants registered.

“In the USSR there was only one conference on catalysis, on the mechanisms of catalytic reactions. It was attended not only by the scientists but also by manufacturers, and it was an exchange of opinions on the academic achievements and demands of the Soviet industry. Then the conference gained an international status, and we decided that we need a site for discussing the problems of the Russian industry that uses catalytic technologies. That’s how Ruscatalysis appeared, first held in Moscow in 2011”, recalled he the history of the event.

The Chair of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Academic Advisor of Boreskov Institute of Catalysis, Academician Valentin Parmon underlined the importance of the subject of green energetics for Russia.

“We established Ruscatalysis for that we could attract our industry more. If we look at the international conferences and congresses on catalysis, a number of the participants are those using the catalytic technologies in industry. Now the subject of renewable energetics is actively pursued, the problem of carbon footprint is being solved, and Russia has hindered a huge scope of work in this direction, and the development of new catalytic technologies is our chance to catch up”, said Parmon.

Director of Kazan Scientific Center RAS, Academician Oleg Sinyashin emphasized the role of catalysis for industry in Republic of Tatarstan:

“The catalytic community faces great challenges concerning not only the traditional directions such as chemistry, petrochemistry, biotechnologies, but also with the environmental and climate problems. These problems require joint decision. Tatarstan hosts large chemical and petrochemical complexes, it is a place with concentrated powerful scientific and educational potential. And the government of the Republic pays great attention to the technologies and innovations. The interconnection of science, education, business and authorities helps to solve many problems”.

Vice-rector of Kazan Federal University Dmitry Tayurskiy also noted that Kazan hosting the Congress is quite symbolical.

“Catalytic technology is the field where the path between fundamental developments, their technological solution and ready product is the shortest. Tatarstan with its economy – powerful petrochemical complex, agriculture – is an interesting site to discuss not only the fundamental scientific problems, but also to talk about their direct use”, he said.

Head of Department of Development of Oil Processing and Petrochemistry of PAO “Gazprom neft” Oleg Vedernikov spoke about how the company develops the technology area.

"We pay great attention to the technological leadership, import phase-out and development of our own technologies in oil processing, and we do this for both increasing our own production efficiency and for the oil processing industry in Russia in general. We are building the catalyst manufacture in Omsk, and I am sure that next year the first tons of production will be made. The manufacture uses only Russian technologies developed together with our institutes. These are the main catalysts of oil processing that we can supply the Russian oil industry with. This year we established our own research center “Gazpromneft – Industrial Innovations”, the main purpose of which is to take the realistic research and introduce it into industry. Ruscatalysis is a good platform for live communication and search for development that can be introduced fast”, explained Vedernikov.

The IV Russian Congress Ruscatalysis is held in Kazan on September 20-25 with the support of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation and Government of the Republic of Tatarstan. The organizers are Boreskov Institute of Catalysis, Kazan Federal University, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Zelinsky Institute of Organic Chemistry, Topchiev Institute of Petrochemical Synthesis, Kazan Scientific Center RAS, Mendeleev Republican Chemical Community, and Scientific Council on Catalysis of the Department of Chemistry and Materials Sciences RAS.
