Researchers of Boreskov Institute of Catalysis received the Prize of Government of the Russian Federation for the realized project on purification of drinking water

9 November 2021

The group of authors including Academician Zinfer Ismagilov, the leading researcher of BIC, academic advisor of the Federal Research Center of Coal and Carbon Chemistry, and Prof. Dr. Denis Kozlov, the head of Department of unconventional catalytic processes BIC, director of scientific-educational center NSU “Institute of Chemical Technologies”, was awarded the Prize of Government of the Russian Federation for the realized project on purification of drinking water. The project is dedicated to the development and introduction of the efficient resource-saving technologies of preparation of drinking water for industrial regions.

The authoring team of the projects includes ten people led by rector of Novosibirsk State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering (Sibstrin), corresponding member of RAS Dr. Yuri Skolubovich. The project also engaged the representatives of North Kuzbass Energy Company, Kemerovo State University, Moscow State University of Civil Engineering, AO “Mosvodokanal”, AO “RT-Invest”, “Center for Strategic Planning and Management of Biomedical Health Risks” of the Federal Medical Biological Agency.

The project’s authors analyzed the data and came to the conclusion that the quality of drinking water differs in different regions of Russia. The problem of the quality of drinking water is of special concern in the residential areas of industrial territories, where environment is polluted. Analysis of water in more than 50 towns of the country helped to reveal the main weak points in the water purification facilities and centralized systems of water supply.

“My role in the project is that of an expert. I answered the questions of technical specialists concerning the methods of cleaning of various contaminations. I also estimated the efficiency of the methods used, helped in development of standard documentation”, says Denis Kozlov.

For purification of the surface and underground waters the project’s authors developed the reactors-clarifiers, the technical characteristics of which increase the productiveness and lower the costs for construction and exploitation of the water purification facilities.

Another plant working along with the reactor-clarifier is oxygenator-degasator of improved construction. Before entering the reactor the underground waters are saturated with oxygen and processed with electricity, and the mineral and organic admixtures in them are oxidized.

The complex of 15 patented products realized within the project includes the active filtering material “Active Pink Sand”. It purifies water from manganese and other admixtures and has an oxidation potential exceeding the parameters of foreign analogs while being much cheaper.

The significance of the obtained results is confirmed by the social and economic effects of introduction of the new technologies of water preparation at 18 water purification stations. The facilities are located in Kemerovo, Novosibirsk, Tomsk, Irkutsk, Krasnoyarsk regions, Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), Moscow. By 2020, the confirmed economic effect made more than 8 bln rubles (net present value).
