Valentin PARMON is an expert in the field of catalysis and photocatalysis, chemical kinetics in condensed phases, chemical radiospectroscopy, chemical methods of energy conversion, unconventional and renewable energy sources, non-equilibrium thermodynamics; he is the author and co-author of more than 950 scientific works, including eight monographs, 33 reviews, nine textbooks for universities, more than 150 inventor’s certificates and patents. His number of citations by WoS (without self-references) exceeds 6300, Hirsch index is above 40.
Valentin Nikolaevich PARMON was born on April 18, 1948, in Brandenburg (Germany) in the family of a military man. In 1972 he graduated from the Department of molecular and chemical physics of Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (MIPT), in 1972-1975 he was post-graduate there and in 1975 defended the PhD thesis in physics and mathematics. In 1975-1977 he worked as a junior researcher in the Institute of Chemical Physics (Moscow).
Since 1977, when Valentin PARMON joined the Siberian Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, he occupied the positions of senior researcher and head of laboratory (1977-1985). In 1985 he became Deputy Director for science in the Institute of Catalysis (now Federal Research Center Boreskov Institute of Catalysis), in 1995-2015, Director of the Institute, and since 2015, Academic Adviser. At the same time (1986-1992) he worked as Deputy Director General and Director General of MNTK “Katalizator” (Cross-Sectoral Research and Technology Center of Catalysts). In 2017 he was elected the Chair of Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Valentin PARMON is Professor and head of Chair of Physical Chemistry at the Department of Natural Sciences in Novosibirsk State University.
The scope of Valentin PARMON’s research embraces the development and investigation of catalysts and catalytic processes for all kinds of applications, in particular, for conversion and accumulation of various kinds of energy, catalysis and photocatalysis in nature and in the use of renewable and unconventional energy sources, as well as clarifying the role of abiogenic catalytic and photocatalytic processes in the forming of the Earth atmosphere composition and biosphere origin.
Valentin PARMON contributed significantly into the development of theory of influence of electronic exchanges over the EPR spectra, developed a theory of the EPR spectra of stable biradicals. He was the first to derive a now classic equation of kinetics with the tunneling of electrons in solid phase with uniform spatial propagation of reagents. He headed the works on revealing the reactions of tunneling of electrons over the solid surface and kinetic isotope effects for the processes of the tunneling of electrons.
He has developed:
In the field of theory of heterogeneous catalysis he gave a qualitative and quantitative explanation to the phenomenon of fluidization of active components of a number of metal catalysts in the course of catalytic processes with carbon deposits forming.
He supervised the works on the methods of non-contact measuring of temperature of nanoparticles of active component of the supported metal catalysts in the moment of their functioning; methods of NMR-tomography in situ adapted to the studying of the state of catalysts in the course of a real catalytic process; revolutionary centrifugal reactors for thermal-shock processing of powdered solid substrates along with the technology for using these reactors to obtain the powders of active alumina; new composition materials for reversible accumulation of low-grade heat; new approaches to the use of microwave radiation in stimulating endothermic catalytic processes; technology of catalytic burning of wet silts and low-quality carbons in fluidized layer of catalysts; genetically modified microorganisms for obtaining the renewable energy source.
The works by Valentin PARMON are related with a number of important studies of practical development of catalytic technologies for deep processing of the fossil raw hydrocarbons and structural reorganization of the raw materials base of chemical industry and energetics, including those based on engaging the renewable sources of energy and materials. As a result of the execution of the projects headed by Parmon a number of domestic catalysts of the latest generations has been developed and introduced into industry, which added up more than 10 bln rubles directly to the Russian GDP. New technologies and plants using the unconventional energy sources have been developed, tested and in some cases used on an industrial scale.
Valentin PARMON takes active part in training the researchers: he has been teaching in Novosibirsk State University for more than 40 years heading the Chair of Physical Chemistry at the Department of Natural Sciences. He is the chair of the Council of the Center of Material and Technology Research of Tomsk State University, Honorary Professor of Saint-Petersburg State Institute of Technology and University of Heilongjiang (Harbin, China). There are 12 Doctors of Sciences and 24 PhD among his students.
