Shared Research Facility “Siberian Circular Photon Source”

The Shared Research Facility “Siberian Circular Photon Source” (SRF “SKIF”) is a mega-science object with the source of synchrotron radiation of the 4+ generation that will be constructed in Koltsovo scientific town in the vicinity of Novosibirsk.

The unique parameters of the new source of synchrotron radiation would allow conducting the cutting-edge research with bright and intensive beams of X-ray radiation in many areas – chemistry, physics, materials science, biology, geology, the humanities. “SKIF” also will help to solve the important problems of innovative and industrial enterprises.

The decision on the construction of “SKIF” is approved by President of Russian Federation Vladimir Putin (Decree No. 356 “On the measures for development of synchrotron and neutron studies and studying infrastructure in the Russian Federation”).

Parameters of the object

The Shared Research Facility “Siberian Circular Photon Source” is the source of synchrotron radiation of the 4+ generation with energy of 3 GeV.

The ring perimeter is 476 m.

“SKIF” will feature the lowest emittance of all existing sources of synchrotron radiation in the world, pm•rad. The brightness of the generated beam of synchrotron radiation depends directly on the emittance. The lower is the emittance, the higher is the brightness and coherence of radiation and, eventually, the efficiency of operation of the source of synchrotron radiation.

Thirty beamlines are planned to be built within “SKIF”, the first six are:

  • 1-1 “Microfocus”. Studying of the samples with the record spatial resolution up to tens of nanometers, in particular, under high pressures and temperatures, with the help of submicron X-ray beams of ultra-high intensity.
  • 1-2 “Structural Diagnostics”. The precise reconstruction of positioning of atoms in crystal samples with the use of X-ray diffraction methods.
  • 1-3 “High-Speed Processes”. The real-time studying of the behavior of substances in explosions, under shock waves, plasma, and flow of high-energy particles.
  • 1-4 “XAFS and Magnetic Dichroism”. Studying of the spatial, electronic and magnetic structures of materials, solutions and melts, molecular crystals and nano-clusters as well as the samples for environmental control with the content of analyzed element up to 0.001%.
  • 1-5 “Diagnostics in High-Energy X-Ray Range”. Obtaining high-contrast images of the studied objects with micron and submicron spatial resolutions.
  • 1-6 “Electronic Structure”. Solving problems with various photoelectron spectroscopy varieties with soft X-ray exciting and studying of the subsurface layers of materials up to separate atoms.

The unique parameters of the new synchrotron would allow conducting the cutting-edge studies not only for solving the problems of fundamental science, but also for the development of science-intensive business, new technologies, import substitution, environmental control, medicine, and other areas.

Areas requiring the results of synchrotron studies:

  • • “green” technologies in chemical/petrochemical industry and energetics;
  • • plane and shipbuilding, space industry;
  • • healthcare: deciphering the structure of biologically important molecules, target delivery of drugs, studying of separate particles of viruses;
  • • nuclear energetics;
  • • additive technologies and “smart” coatings;
  • • nanotechnologies;
  • • making superconductors of new type;
  • • robotic science;
  • • microelectronics;
  • • geology and geophysics;
  • mining and processing industry.
